Patna,
Feb 16 (IANS) Police have tightened the security of
Siwan jail in the state and are planning to install
a close circuit TV in the cell of Rashtriya Janata Dal
(RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin, following intelligence
reports that the RJD leader could escape.
Shahabuddin
was shifted to Siwan jail in November 2006 after a successful
surgery in New Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical
Sciences.
"We
have tightened the security of Siwan jail and planning
to install a close circuit TV in the cell of Shahabuddin
after a report of a special branch superintendent of
police alerted that he could try to escape from the
jail," Siwan Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar
said Friday.
He
said that Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) personnel were
also directed to keep a close watch on the jail in view
of the report.
However,
the RJD has reacted sharply against the intelligence
report, terming it as a move to mentally torture the
leader. "Sahabuddin is a law abiding MP and he
always respected the court," RJD leader Shayam
Rajak said.
In
June 2006, the state government had constituted a special
court at Siwan to conduct the cases pending against
Shahabuddin.
A
Lok Sabha member from Siwan since 1996, Shahabuddin
faces charges in over 40 criminal cases, including those
relating to murder, abduction and possession of illegal
arms and stolen vehicles.
