PATNA: In recent years, India has witnessed a surge in entrepreneurial energy, with a growing number of startups emerging across various sectors. While much of this startup ecosystem has been centered in urban hubs like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai, a silent revolution is brewing in rural India, said Shashank Kumar, Co-Founder and CEO of DeHaat, a technology-driven platform focused on empowering farmers.
Speaking about the 'Prospects of Building Startups in Bihar' at the 6th Bihar Times Conclave in Patna, Shashank said that the prospects of building startups in rural areas have never been more promising, driven by a unique set of challenges and opportunities.
He said, "I have seen firsthand how rural entrepreneurship can transform agricultural landscapes and bring about socio-economic change at the grassroots level. Our 13-year journey has been quite satisfying. The next span of 13-15 years looks equally exciting, primarily because we see lots of struggle, challenges, successes, failures and responsibilities."
'It is a matter of pride where we are today. But when we look around, we still find a lot of missing elements. A major portion of India's GDP, about 14-15 per cent, comes from agriculture, but farmers are not happy and satisfied. We still need to do something for them. That keeps us motivated,' he added.
Highlighting the untapped potential of Bihar, Shashank said that the state has long been perceived as a landscape dominated by traditional agriculture and limited access to modern resources. However, this perception is fast changing. The digital divide is closing, infrastructure is improving, and more young people from rural areas are acquiring skills that equip them to create innovative solutions to local challenges.
Shahank said that rural entrepreneurship can transform agricultural landscapes and bring about socio-economic change at the grassroots level.
"Zomato, Swiggy, OYO, were created in metro cities to cater to the needs of people living in those cities. Now, it is time to focus on the requirements of people living in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. People gathered here know the scenario better. You must become a catalyst and innovate for the people of Bihar," he said.
He said that the future of startups in Bihar is not just about business growth; it's about creating a new wave of economic development, social progress, and technological advancement. By leveraging the power of technology, collaboration, and innovation, rural entrepreneurs can play a pivotal role in transforming the rural landscape, driving inclusive growth, and contributing to India's broader economic and social goals.
"As we move forward, the rise of rural startups will be crucial to bridging the urban-rural divide, fostering sustainable development, and ensuring that the benefits of India's economic growth are felt by all, especially those in the heart of our villages. The journey is long, but the potential is immense," he concluded.
