Daring Siwan Don

Ajay Kumar

Shahabuddin, the MP from Siwan for the first time finds the long arms of law reaching him. A robinhood brand politician representing a typical syndrome of crime-politics nexus, became law unto himself. During the last decade he slowly graduated in politics and crime simultaneously. He never bothered for any law and order maintaining machinery; all sorts of officer came and went but his empire remained unchallenged. A few years ago, he slapped a DSP rank officer in full public view. Later when the police reached his village Pratappur, his gunmen gave a stiff resistance the policeforce by firing more than thousand rounds. Though Shahabuddin escaped unhurt, twelve of his associates were killed.

Interestingly, this man started his political career from Jiradei, the native place of Dr. Rajendra Prasad by becoming MLA in 1990. In the last twelve years, more than 30 cases of all sorts of crimes were registered against him. But no police officer mustered enough courage to arrest or even interrogate him. Later he was exonerated in 14 cases due to absence of any witness or in some cases, witnesses became hostile in the court. In some of the cases even policemen as witness turned hostile.

The terror of this ganglord is so wide spread that hardly the presence of any political party is felt in Siwan.

In electoral politics, he is challenged only by CPI (ML). A couple of years ago, the party had sent one of its brightest youth leader, Chadrasekhar, the former president of the Students’Union of JNU. Before he could consolidate his mass base in Siwan, he was shot dead in main market by allegedly henchmen of Shahabuddin. A nationwide protest forced govt. to institute a CBI enquiry. Whoever dared to take on his might faced the same fate.

A renowned lawyer of Siwan, Raghubir Sharan Verma, his wife and son were also shot dead in broad day light; the situation and scene was quite similar to all new bollywood violence centric films. This criminal act posed a great question mark on sense and sensibility of the larger Bihari civil society. Recently, on the request of his son, the Supreme Court transferred the case to Jharkhand for impartial trial.

Another man who poses a challenge to Siwan don’s might is Virendra Kumar Pandey, owner of a distillery unit. Recently on his request, Supreme Court issued instructions to the state government to provide adequate security to him.

His crime network is so vast that every major crime finds its link to his house. A notorious criminal, Dinesh Tiwary confessed before the Uttar Pradesh Police that 2.5 crore ransom money collected from abduction of Ashwini Gupta from Patna deposited in a foreign bank through Hawala channel for him. Recently arrested Patna terror, Sultan Mia showed no hesitation in accepting his close association with Shahabuddin even before media persons.

The recent action against the Crime-lord has been initiated by Police in a case of kidnapping of Munna Chaudhary who actively supported CPI (ML) candidate in the last parliamentary election. It is alleged that Munna Chaudhary was killed and later his body was thrown into the furnace of brick kiln.

One wonders why it took almost two years for the police to initiate action against the don. Surprisingly, the RJD supremo, Laloo Yadav who promoted Shahabuddin has been keeping mum. In the political circle, everyone knows that Shahabuddin is having a very strained relationship with Laloo. Can DGP of Bihar muster enough courage to put other ganglords of Bihar behind the bar?

It is about time that the above has been written about. I am also from Bihar, and have visited Siwan just recently on my five-month trip to India. Contrary to the other gentlemen, the roads that I visited in Siwan are horrible, and also contrary to his opinion, many people I met were in fact afraid of the so-called Don, so one has to wonder from what point of view the gentleman was commenting. The fact is that DGP D.P. OJHA is a very courageous man who not only stood up to shahbuddin, but also put him behind bars. Bihar needs more public figures such as Ojha and Dubey who both by different means, stand up against crime and corruption. Since Bihar cannot govern itself, and has sank to such depths, Center needs to dismiss the uneducated Rabri Devi and her govt. and directly rule from South Block.

I wouldn’t like to justify whatever has been written cause crime can’t be justified.

But, would like to remind you the good cause of this story. Who made Shahabuddin a DON? A very expected answer is “Laloo Pd. Yadav “- I believe that Laloo is the father (patron) of all criminals/dons & all ransom/kidnappings/ are growing under the dynamic leader (so called) Laloo. He is the person who made Bihar like hell. Better you should write a detailed story on Laloo with fact files of his heinous agenda.

Shahabuddin is one of among them who dare to challenge Laloo. DGP is what, he is the governing body & unfortunately has been misused in this case.

I have recently visited 4-5 districts including Siwan of Bihar & fortunately I met local people and some how manage to know the realities. All five districts of Bihar are singing the same song of backwardness (education, road, transport, kidnapping, ransom etc) & what a amazing thing that in the name of industry nothing is there except kidnapping industry.

Siwan is one of the best districts I found amongst them in terms of educational institutions, road and of course local businessman & they are happy enough with Shahabuddin.

None of single state of India can be compared with Bihar & the leadership.

No doubt, Laloo is the icon for secular world but that can’t be worked out for a long. Muslims & Yadav don’t have any option apart from Laloo.

Please don’t think that it has been written in favour of Shahabuddin or anyone as I belong to the same community

You have made Mr Shahabuddin a scapegoat. No doubt, whatever you have written about him is true to the last alphabet, but he us not the only of the kind. Each and every polotician in Bihar has been like that. Bihar did not change over night. It took a long and often painful path to transform from the land of Budha and Valmiki to the present land of Laloo and Shahabuddin. Please compare the Saga of Shahabuddin with that of Laloo and Jagganath Mishra and Sattan Yadav, and you will find that your victim Shahabuddin is a much lesser culprit. Only one quote can aptly describe the politicians of Bihar -- "Chor Chor Mausera Bhai". You can never extimate which one is a bigger thief than the other. All politicians in Bihar are like an infinite sink. Nothing can satiate them.
