Lichee may soon become all-season fruit

Patna, (BiharTimes): Thanks to Lichee Research Institute, the delicious summer fruit, may soon become all-season fruit.
The Muzaffarpur-based Institute has developed a lichee variety, which can be planted in various agro-climatic zones and harvested in different months like August and January as well. At present lichee is harvested in May and early June.

According to its director, K K Kumar, the Institute is undertaking extensive experiment on a lichee variety, called Longan, that can be harvested in August. Farmers have been supplied with Longan plants in Kanti region of Muzaffarpur and some other areas as part of the ongoing experiment. Within the next three years, these plants would bear fruits.

Scientists at the Institute are also working on a lichee variety, which would yield in January. Plants of Longan, that owes its orgin to a Thai fruit variety can be generated both through seeds and plants. It can be processed better because of its thicker flesh and has a longer shelf life which would make its transportation easier.

Longan can be harvested just three years after its tree is planted while the present lichee varient usually bear fruit after four years, he said.

However, light brown-coloured Longan would don a new look than traditional Indian lichee variety, which is red in colour.
